Third team review of the season 2006/7 (13/05/07)

Cwmbran Celtic, champions of Newport & District Premier Y! Who would have thought it? On 10 March the team was way off the pace having drawn 4 and lost 5 of their 17 games. There followed a 9 game winning sequence under player manager Matthew Williams which lifted the trophy by 3 clear points.
The final playing record was
Played 26 Won 17 Drawn 4 Lost 5 Goals for 91 against 41 Points 55.
At the start of the season the team, which was essentially last season's 4th team brought up by Paul Hughes, was expected to finish mid-table given that last season's Premier Y team had moved up to the Welsh League Reserve Division and that looked to be the pattern early season.
There were days when the boys hit top form winning games twice by the margin of 8-1 and once by 7-1. However too many draws and losses kept the team in mid-table, and then came that fabulous run-in.
In the cup Celtic were defending the Senior Bowl they won last season and after beating Coed Eva 3-2 and Merry Miller 4-3 in two thrilling games, a win in the semi-final against Christchurch seemed a formality(Celtic won the league fixtures 4-1 and 6-0). However Christchurch raised their game and knocked out the holders 2-1.

The players:
Goalkeeper: James Cheshire
Defenders: Matthew Williams, Gareth Bader, Gareth Strange, Joe Hackwood, Steven Powell, Jamie Bailey, Robbie Wall, Steve Davies, Nicky Hughes, Paul Culleton.
Midfield: Dean Harris, Andrew Butcher, Ben Hobin, Chris Isaak, Matthew Ryder, Rhys Dalgliesh, Mike Phillips, Curtis Meaney, Miek Traynor, Shane Harris.
Forwards: Lloyd Smith, Adam Griffiths, Daniel Rosser, Jon Butcher, Alex Pritchard, Richard Edmunds.
