TEAM HISTORY
4th team review of the season 2006/7 (16/05/07)

The 4th team is always on a hiding to nothing in terms of trying to achieve success bearing in mind the demands of the higher ranking teams in the club.

There were no great expectations this year given that this team went up a division on account of the elevation of the Reserves and third team to stronger leagues. It therefore came as no surprise that at the half way stage the team was nestled in the lower reaches of Division 2.

There then followed an extraordinary turnaround, the team winning 11 and drawing one of their last 12 matches to finish with a playing record of:
Played 26 Won 15 Drawn 4 Lost 7 Goals for 93 Against 55 Points 49 Position 5th
Why the re-surgence? It coincided with a desire on the part of all the club's players to be involved in the success of the club. The feelgood factor started with the Welsh League team going on an unbeaten run of 24 matches in winning the 3rd Division championship. It continued with the 3rd team winning 9 games on the bounce to snatch the Premier Y title and it extended here in the 4ths with this amazing finish.

Week after week Celtic smashed the opposition until AC Pontymister halted the juggernaut with a 2-2 draw.
A 5-1 thrashing of Cwmcarn cost the Islwyn side the league title by one point.
Much credit must go to player manager Neil Gilmore for his pragmatic approach to getting the best out of whatever side he had at his disposal.

The regular players for this team were midfield marauder and part-time goalie Shawn Beagen; stalwart defenders Neil Gilmore, Paul Culleton, Jamie Baily, Gerald Silverthorne and Kevin Perkins; in midfield evergreen maestro Ian Jones and cultured Gavin Protherough aided by the young legs of Shane Harris (13 goals - brother of Dean not twin) and Mike Williams,
and up front the ever-slim ace strikers Gavin Powell (20 goals) and Matthew Vella.
