Cwmbran Celtic Academy got off to a satisfying start to their season, with a well earned win in their opening game at Dinas Powys.
Celtic began brightly, with early chances falling to Owen Llewellyn, Lee Newman & Rakesh Patel, but all three failed to seize the opportunities given to them.
However, Celtic at this time were fully in control, and can count themselves unlucky not to have gone ahead.
But Celtic's pressure paid off after 31 minutes, when Simon Prangley was put through, where he cooly placed the ball beyond the oncoming keeper, to put 'The Celtic' 1-0 up. Celtic continued to press, and following some good work from Alex Fry & Llewellyn down the right, where the cross found Newman who tucked away an easy chance to make it 2-0 after 40 minutes. Celtic where rocked a minute later when the Dinas Powys number 7, Tom Borrill, scored with an unstoppable shot from just outside the box into the top left hand corner of the net, giving the Celtic keeper, Tom Morgan, no chance.
A score line at half time of 2-1 to Celtic, gave the Gwent side food for thought, on how many chances were missed, the margin should have been more emphatic.
After the break Dinas Powys capitalised on this and came out showing more fight, and quickly had Cwmbran on the defensive. Celtic were lucky to hold on to their lead, after a goalmouth scamble was cleared by some last ditch defending.
As the home side tried to get back on terms, they nearly went futher behind following misses from the Celtic forwards. A neat piece of play from Patel & Llewellyn almost resulted in a 3rd goal for Celtic, only for Newman to put his header just wide of the post.
After 79 minutes a corner from Prangley found Celtic defender Ben Luck at the near post, who headed home powerfully into the Dinas Powys net. This capped off an outstanding display by Luck, who was making his first appearance for the club.
This was a complete team performance from the lads, which all bodes well for the season ahead.
