History

The Story so far.................
15 Dec 2006

We are the area's oldest established football club, having celebrated our 75th Anniversary in 2000. We are probably also the largest football club in Wales in terms of the number of teams we run up to 23 in any one season.

In our original years we were known as Cwmbran Celtic but later became known as Cwmbran CYMS (Catholic Young Mens Society). When the Club was re-formed in the early 60s, it took the name of Cwmbran Catholics and it achieved a lot of it's modern success under that name, winning the Gwent Senior Cup in 1970-71 and finishing runners-up on a number of occasions in the old Gwent Premier League. In 1972, with the club no longer having any religious connections, a decision was made to revert to the Club's original name.

In 1979, we were fortunate enough to secure our own Social Club, which is know as Cwmbran Celtic Sports Club and is located in Oak Street, Old Cwmbran.

For many years, most of our senior football was played at Cwmbran Park but due mainly to drainage problems there, we re-located to the pitch on Cwmbran Stadium outfields in the early 90s and have played there ever since.

In season 2005/6, after finishing runners-up in the Gwent County F.A. League, the previous season, our first team joined the Welsh Football League. In this first season we shared the main pitch at Cwmbran Stadium with Cwmbran Town.

After carrying out improvements to our old ground to bring it up to Welsh League standard, we returned there at the start of season 2006/7 and re-named the ground Celtic Park. This move also allowed us to enter our Reserve team in the Welsh League Reserve Division (East).

That season proved to be a momentous one as we were promoted to Division Two as Third Division Champions!

Our other two senior sides compete in the Newport & District League.

Our junior/youth sides play in the Torfaen Junior & Youth Football League and in the Gwent County Youth League and have a long history of success in League and Cup Competitions.

In 2004 we fielded our first all girls team and we now have four such teams playing in local leagues.

At the start of season 2007/8, we entered into a collaboration agreement with the Football Academy at Fairwater High School, Cwmbran and their Under 19 and under 18 teams play under our name in the Welsh League Youth Division (East) and the Gwent County F.A. Youth League respectively.
