This was our toughest game by far this season and one we were glad to come through with a victory. The Pontnewydd players had arrived early to prepare and by kick-off time, they were well and truly up for the challenge.
The match was played throughout in a very hard & competitive manner, and I must pay tribute to Fryo who I thought refereed the contest superbly.
In the first half we struggled to get our passing game going as the Pontnewydd players worked hard and closed us down quickly, and this seemed to affect our composure and we did not get the ball down and play as well as we can. Chances were fairly limited in the first half, although we did manage to force a couple of smart saves from Jordan in the Pontnewydd goal. But with half-time looming, a neat move down our left involving Sam and Chris P, ended with Chris H tucking the ball away neatly for a 1-0 lead.
The early part of the second half was again a bit scrappy and we continued to give the ball away too cheaply, and as a result of this, Pontnewydd were able to equalise ten minutes into the second half through centre forward Marcus Lins' cool finish. To be honest, it was fair reward for all the hardwork and quality they had brought to the game.
At this point we were looking for a positive response from the boys and we got exactly that. We proceeded to dominate the game and started to create more chances and eventually the lead was regained through a somewhat fortuitous goal from Michael Davies. A speculative lofted lob towards the goal held up in the wind and dropped perfectly just under the bar and in to the net just avoiding the keepers' grasp.
From here on in we were able to see out the game in a relatively comfortable fashion, but it had been an excellent match which for the first hour could have gone either way. Although I feel we could have played better this was nonetheless a real test and the boys came through it well.
This weeks comedy moment:
Chris P trying to take a corner and kicking the flag instead of the ball.
