We are the area’s oldest established football club, having celebrated our 75th Anniversary in 2000. We are probably also the largest football club in Wales in terms of the number of teams we run—4 Senior sides, 1 Youth and 16 Junior sides, including two all girls teams that were formed early in 2004.
In our original years we were known as Cwmbran Celtic but later became known as Cwmbran CYMS (Catholic Young Men’s Society). When the Club was re-formed in the early 60’s, it again took the name of Cwmbran Catholics and it was under that name that it achieved a lot of it’s modern success at senior level, winning the Gwent Senior Cup in 1970-71 and finishing runners-up on a number of occasions in the old Gwent Premier League. In 1972, with the club no longer having any religious connections, a decision was made to revert to the Club’s original name and, in the first season after that change, won the Gwent Amateur Cup.
Our Junior Section has always been successful and hardly a season passes without at least one of our teams achieving League and/or Cup success. We have a reputaion of having some of the best run Junior teams in the area and are determined that the section will continue to provide excellent coaching and playing opportunities for the young people of the area.
In 1979, we were fortunate enough (after a lot of hard work by the then Officers & Committee) to secure our own Social Club, which is know as Cwmbran Celtic Sports Club and is located in Oak Street, Old Cwmbran. Although it has had its ups and downs over the years, it is now a very successful local club with a solid membership of both football and social clientele.
For many years, most of our senior football was played at Cwmbran Park but due mainly to drainage problems there, we re-located to the pitch on Cwmbran Stadium outfields in the early 90’s and have played there ever since. We now have an excellent chance of developing the facilities here as Cwmbran Cricket Club, with whom we shared the facilities, have relocated. This has given us the opportunity to develop the Cricket Pavilion into football changing rooms and we hope to complete this work in the near future.
We finished runners-up in last year’s Gwent County F.A. League First Division and, as Champions Clydach Wasps were unable to accept a place in the Welsh League, we were offered the opportunity. Having already arranged to share the main pitch at Cwmbran Stadium with Cwmbran Town, we gratefully grasped the chance with both hands.
Our other senior sides compete in the Newport & District League. Our junior/youth sides play in the Torfaen Junior & Youth Football League and in the Gwent County Youth League.
In 2004, we formed our first all girl junior team and this has now developed to the stage where we run an under 11 and under 13 team and have in excess of 40 girls regularly receiving coaching with us.
In junior football, should all players be given the same amount of time on the pitch during a game, regardless of ability?
Yes, always. Getting kids involved is the most important thing.
Yes, unless it is an important game.
No. Winning is important at all ages, so the best players should play more often.
